Sri Lanka opened their Cricket World Cup campaign, with an easy, impressive, and a comprehensive win over the minnows Canada. Canada playing as the least rated team in this world Cup did not make the same impressions they made in some of the practice games. In one of the warm up matches, Canada gave a hard time for England, but their performance today wasn’t no way any closer to that performance.
Sri Lankan captain Sangakkara elected to bat in a newly laid pitch at a brand new stadium in Hambantota, Sri Lanka. In the beginning it was a test for Sri Lankan batsmen, to understand how the pitch plays.
After a strong 65 runs foundation laid down by the Sri Lankan openers, captain and vice captain capitalized on the weaker bowling attack of Canada, with Mahela scoring a century and Sangakkara missing his century by just 8 runs.
Sri Lanka put a gigantic 332 for 7 wickets and the Canadians were never fell comfortable chasing the total down.
Canada fell all out for just 122 runs, with Rizwaan Cheema registering the highest score of 37. His score included two massive sixes off Muttiah Muralitharan, which was the only highlight in the Canadian innings.
In the end, Sri Lanka won the match by a massive 210 runs to leave a net run rate of 4.2 in the points table.
