The opening match of Cricket World Cup 2011 came to an end, giving the co-host India an 87 runs victory over the co-host Bangladesh.
The match got underway in front of a massive crowd in Bangladesh’s Mirpur cricket stadium. The ground conditions were predicted to favor the side batting second, with all last 12 matches played here were won by the side batting second. With this pre-match analysis, Bangladesh elected to field first after winning the toss.
Virender Sehwag became the first batsman to score a century in Cricket World Cup 2011, with an outstanding performance to score 175 off 140 balls. His innings included 5 sixes and 14 boundaries. Virat Kohli joined the party with an unbeaten 100, to take the Indian score to a massive 370/4 at the end of 50 overs.
In reply, Bangladesh openers started well with a 56 runs opening wicket partnership off 35 balls. Indian seamer Sreesanth went for 24 runs in his third over, before captain M.S. Dhoni called for a bowling change from his end. The bowling changed worked for Dhoni, when Munaf Patel took the wicket of Imrul Kayes.
Since then, Bangladesh run chase were never on target with over 8 runs per over required all the time. Opener Tamim Iqbal scored 70 off 86 balls which many commentators scene as ‘uncharacteristic’ for his standard. Captain Shakib Al Hassan kept Bangladeshi hopes alive with a 55 off 50 balls, before he fell for Yusuf Pathan.
In the end, Bangladesh scored 283 for 9 wickets.
Overall, the batting performance of both teams was good but both teams will worry a little bit about their bowling performance.
Tomorrow we have two matches scheduled, with other host nation Sri Lanka taking on the minnows Canada in Hambantota and New Zealand opening their World Cup campaign against Kenya in Chennai.
