India's Chances in the World Cup

Samons Mathews:

Can India really win the world cup 2011?  There are a lot of arguments from experts and former players favouring this opinion. Cricket World Cup 2011 is just a month away and every Indian cricket fan dreams that India wins the World Cup as it is a matter of national pride for whole of the nation. Does India really  have a  chance to win the world cup 2011?

There may be a lot of arguments from experts and former players favouring this opinion. It was there in the past World cups also. One thing is quite clear that there are no favourites or supernatural teams that can claim to be invincible in this tournament. The fray is open for all the teams. Australia was a formidable team in the last three world cups like the West Indies in the first three editions of the world cup.
India won it's first and the only World Cup long back in 1983 under the leadership of Kapil Dev. After this 27 years & 6 World Cups have gone by but Indian cricket team has not been able to repeat that success story written by Kapil Dev’s team. It was an unexpected victory as the Kapils devils were truly underdogs against the mighty West Indies defending a score of 183 in the final. India rode on the contribution of multiple all rounder’s like Binny, Madan, Mohinder and Kapil himself.
Although, India came quite close to winning the World Cup again in 1987, 1996 and 2003 but could not produce the same magic of 1983.
India hosted the 1987 edition of world cup. India was defending their title under Kapil Dev. India topped in the league stage winning all their games except one. India lost to England in Semis of the tournament and was out of the comptetion. The star performers for this edition were Navjot Sidhu, Mohd Azharuddin, Kapil Dev, Ravi Shastri. Sindhu earned the sobriquet “Sixer Sindhu”, while in 1996 world cup was hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka with the change in format was introduced and India was placed in Group A with Australia, Kenya, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. India under Mohammad Azaruddin  lost their match to Australia and Sri Lanka but managed to qualify for the Quarter Finals. India defeated the arch rivals Pakistan in the Quarter Finals and made their way for semi finals. India lost to Sri Lanka in the semis after the game was called off due to crowd interruption and declared Sri Lanka as the winners. The 2003 world cup was hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Kenya. India started their campaign against minnows Holland and won that match. In the next match they lost to Australia very badly. The repercussion of the loss was felt by families of some players as well as the fans attacked the families of non performing players. This wounded Indian team under Sourav Ganguly bounced back to record 8 successive wins in the tournament to reach finals. They beat Pakistan as well in the course but in the finals they faced the invincible defending champions Australia again. The Indian team bowed to the tremendous pressure of the world cup finals and lost the game. But this world cup changed the attitude in Indian team and they looked formidable side thereafter as they started believing in themselves and their abilities.
This time India has got a great chance of winning the World Cup as the World Cup is once again taking place in India and the bulk of the matches will be played in India. The Team India can always take advantage of home conditions. Our selectors have underlined this fact in selecting spinning all-rounders in the final 15. It is going to be the last World Cup of Sachin Tendulkar & he would like to bid farewell to International Cricket with a World Cup in his kitty as it is the only thing missing in his long illustrious career.  Players want to honour him by winning it for him. We have the best team to do the job in Indian conditions. In Dhoni , we have  a  captain of the same mold of Kapil Dev - a fierce competitor leading from the front and a  great motivator. In addition to this, India's performance has been consistent in last one year even without the services of the main players. Injuries avoided main players like Sehwag, Gambhir, Yuvraj, Zaheer, Harbhajan for a time while Tendulkar mostly stayed away from One Day Cricket to concentrate on test cricket. So once all these players get back in Team India it will undoubtedly be a formidable combination and if this full strength Indian team plays up to its potential keeping their nerves before the home ground there is no reason why India can't win this World Cup. It will open a new chapter in the annuls of this cricket crazy nation.

I Don,t think so that india have a chance to win the world cup if you compare indian team to any side of the other teams of the world i think they are better but the point is that so many of indian players are injured in those days and the selector have given them a chance which is not good although they are like the world,s legend but you can,t win with the injured player .

Indians were the clear favorites till the start of the world cup. But now, on seeing India bowling attack, one would normally doubt India's chances in the world cup. Recently i read an article titled "cooling cricketers for the hot Indian weather". It was really interesting. The mentioned article can be read at http://www.sinapseblog.com/2011/02/cooling-cricketers-for-hot-indian.html
